Our launch of a new, free service as a means to build our
newsletter was an ideal fit for their brand of interest generation.
Our stated goal at project launch was to bring in new list
members at a cost per acquisition (CPA) that would beat what
we could do with SEM. Their 'Proprietary Buzz Creation Method'
did beat the cost per new member through SEM. Additionally
it became clear that SEM required more maintenance, and eventually
failed to scale. SEM CPA grew while results leveled off, while
the word of mouth campaign launched by OuterJoin grew every
week and the CPA continued to drop.
